North Cotabato farmers brace for longer drought

KIDAPAWAN CITY - Hundreds of farmers in North Cotabato are bracing for longer dry spell as
the cost of damaged crops continue to rise in the province, agriculture official
today said.

To
date, the dry spell has already destroyed about P230-million worth of
agricultural crops such as rice, corn, banana and rubber, North Cotabato’s major
products.

Dr.
Eliseo Mangliwan, North Cotabato provincial agriculturist, if the dry spell
continues until next month, more crops will be damaged.

Kidapawan City dad mulls filing ordinance putting city under state of calamity

KIDAPAWAN CITY - A city councilor here is contemplating of filing a resolution putting the city under state of calamity due to the extend of damages to agricultural products due to the long dry spell. Councilor Mario Flores, chair of the Sangguniang Panglungsod committee on agriculture, said the drought which started to hit Kidapawan City and the province in January has already damaged about P44 million worth of crops in the city's 40 villages.Flores said severely affected are banana, palay and corn.

'We have enough rice supply,' NFA South Cotabato

KORONADAL CITY -- The National Food Authority in South Cotabato has assured the public of ample supply of rice should the dry spell continue, an NFA official said.Roque Hilario, NFA provincial manager, said currently NFA has91,000 bags buffer stocks or security stocks in its warehouse. We have enough rice supply, Hilario said, adding thesupply would last for about 200 days. Hilario said preparations for any disaster or calamity was part of the security disaster plan of NFA in 2015. The NFA has been prepared for the El Nino phenomenon, he told DXOM-AM Radyo Bida Koronadal.

Drought destroys P68-M crops in North Cotabato

KIDAPAWAN CITY -Some P68 million worth of crops in North Cotabato, majority of which are considered high-value, were destroyed by a long dry spell, data from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG) showed. Cotabato provincial agriculturist Engineer Eliseo Mangliwan said the damaged crops could no longer be recovered. It’s actually a total loss of our crops with no chance of recovery,” said Mangliwan. The damaged crops included rice, corn, and high-value crops such as banana, cacao, and coffee.
