Prelate to Filipinos: Denounce conflict, work for peace

MANILA – A Catholic prelate on Monday called on Filipinos to reject acts that promote division and conflict and promote peace toward nation-building, ahead of the country's Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor).

“Now, let us be resolved to denounce wars, conflicts which will result only to destruction and death. We work hard to foster and promote peace so that all would live in harmony, orderly, and equality,” Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos said in a statement.

2 retired Filipino bishops in Mindanao pass away

MANILA - Two retired Catholic prelates passed away on Thursday.

In separate social media posts, the dioceses of Tandag and Malaybalay announced the passing of bishop emeritus Nereo Odchimar and bishop emeritus Honesto Pacana, respectively.  

The Tandag diocese said Odchimar died at 10:27 a.m. at the San Pedro Hospital in Davao City. He was 83. 

“While in his retirement, he had been suffering from diabetes and kidney complications. He died of metabolic encephalopathy due to end-stage renal disease and diabetic nephropathy,” it added.

Pagadian bishop dies after heart bypass

DAVAO CITY - Bishop Ronald Lunas of Pagadian died on Tuesday at a hospital in Davao City, where he had been in intensive care following a heart bypass operation last week.

The 57-year-old bishop died at 8:28 a.m., according to Archbishop Romulo Valles of Davao in a message to the secretariat of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines.

A social media post from the Pagadian Cathedral revealed that Lunas underwent heart bypass surgery on December 28.

The diocese has yet to release a statement on Luna’s death as of this posting.

CBCP calls for prayers for peace in Israel, Palestine

MANILA – The Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) on Tuesday appealed to the faithful to pray for peace amid ongoing conflict between Israeli troops and the Hamas militant group.

"It is urgent and necessary that we pray and hope for peace. Peace is what our world needs. We pray for restraint and goodwill to reign in everybody’s heart and mind," Antipolo Bishop Ruperto Santos, vice chair of the CBCP - Episcopal Commission for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People (ECMI) said in an interview with Church-run Radio Veritas.

Filipina WYD volunteer gets surprise of a lifetime

After months of being a service volunteer for the World Youth Day in Lisbon, a former campus minister got the surprise of her lifetime: a lunch with Pope Francis.

Audrey Abatol has been a fan of Pope John Paul II. Growing up, she has always been fascinated with the WYD founded by the pope-turned-saint.

Since November last year, she had been volunteering at WYD international relations secretariat after resigning from her work at a Jesuit-run school in the city of Mandaue.

Caritas Philippines appeals aid for typhoon-hit areas

The Caritas Philippines, the Church’s social action arm, launched an appeal on Thursday to help relief efforts in typhoon-hit areas of the country.

Authorities said typhoon “Egay” brought widespread flooding and landslides to several parts of the country on Wednesday, leaving at least five people feared dead.

The Office of Civil Defense reported that approximately 44,356 families or 180,439 individuals have been affected in the regions of Ilocos, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and Soccsksargen.

Should people hold hands or put their hands in the air during the “Lord’s Prayer”?

The liturgical commission of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) has clarified that “both gestures are liturgically accepted” to accompany the prayer during Mass.

“We are, therefore, exhorted to exercise sincere respect for each other in the gesture we express during the prayer,” Archbishop Victor Bendico, chairman of the CBC Episcopal Commission on Liturgy, said in a circular released Friday.
