What? Free condom for school children?
KORONADAL CITY -- The government's plan of providingsecondary students with free condoms in fight against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)and HIV/AIDS doesn't make sense to South Cotabato Governor Daisy Avance Fuentes, thus her strong opposition. The lady governor obviously expressed her displeasure over the proposal. For Fuentes, the plan will not do good and it sends wrong message to the young minds of school children.Instead, Fuentes said, condoms may be provided for free to lodging houses and inns for lovers to use and prevent the spread of STDs. Instead of giving them condoms, Fuentes is pushing for right education and information to the school children. The Diocese of Marbel, through its spokesperson Valmie Mariveles, also strongly opposed the government plan. Condoms will not prevent teenage pregnancy, Mariveles said.Instead of giving them condoms that will encourage them pre-marital sex, Mariveles suggested to the government to improve the promotion of values in public and private schools. Or develop a comprehensive sports program that will also promtoe values, discipline and moral values to spare the children from doing bad things, she added. The Catholic Church maintains its stance against use of artificial family planning methods.
