MAKILALA,
North Cotabato (Sept. 22) – The series of quakes that hit the town of Makilala,
North Cotabato on Saturday and Sunday prompted the local government unit here
to place the entire town under state of calamity.
Mayor
Rudy Caoagdan said at least 208 families or 1,040 individuals were displaced
due to series of quakes that destroyed homes, including a chapel and barangay
hall.
Caoagdan
said 155 houses, 32 of which were totally wrecked by quakes, were documented in
the villages of Luayon, Bato, Malungon, Guangan, Villaflores and Sto. Nino.
He
said at least four people were injured in the series of quakes Phivolcs traced
to a new fault line that traverses from Makiala to Columbio, Sultan Kudarat.
A
total of 11 government facilities such as school buildings, roads and bridges
had cracks and considered dangerous,” Caoagdan said.
We
are looking for relocation sites for the affected families to ensure their
safety,” he told Radyo Bida Kidapawan, adding the town engineering office is
still conducting assessment and evaluation of the extent of damages.
A
4-year-old girl miraculously survived the magnitude 5.2 tremor that hit at
12:26 on Saturday after debris, like hollow blocks, fell on her.The girl, according
to her father Joseph, was inside the house when the quake struck.
When
we found her after the tremor, she was covered with debris of hollow blocks,”
the father said. We only saw her head above the debris, we immediately and
carefully pulled her off.”
