COTABATO CITY  -- In celebration of the Environment Month this June, environment officials and employees have conducted soil bagging activity on Thursday to prepare young trees for tree planting activities.

Minister Abdulraof A. Macacua of the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources and Energy in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MENRE-BARMM) led employees in soil bagging at the ministry’s regional nursery in Barangay Dimapatoy, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao.

It is among the major environmental efforts of MENRE to be actualized this June.

To ensure the sustainable growth of the seedling nursery, Macacua and other environment workers have committed to continue developing it along with various seedling nurseries across the Bangsamoro.

Macacua said the soil bagging will be considered a part of the ministry’s greening program to sustain the life of the area amidst the recent drought and take advantage of the rainy season.

Macacua said in a statement that MENRE-BARMM, with the assistance from Provincial Environment, Natural Resources and Energy Office (PENREO) Maguindanao headed by acting PENREO Doming D. Dagadas, will regularly visit the seedling nurseries in order to assess and evaluate the needs of the nursery sites and take action on its sustainability.

The minister said he ordered the planting of more seedlings at the office nurseries across the region to ensure ample supply of ready to plant trees as part of the region’s greening program.

He added that his office will always be ready to work with non-government organizations and volunteer environmentalists to plant more trees and help preserve the environment.

BARMM is composed of the provinces of Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Basilan, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi and the cities of Cotabato, Marawi and Lamitan.
