Disappointed Donaire fan succumbs to heart attack

COTABATO CITY -- A retired police superintendent who was an avid fan of Nonito Donaire, Jr. died instantly from cardiac arrest after seeing a Mexican-American challenger beat him in their match Sunday.Relatives of Wales Kasuyo, who retired five years ago from the Philippine National Police, said he complained of chest pain before he stopped breathing and died after seeing Jessie Magdaleno defeat Donaire Sunday (Manila time) at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas.A nephew of Kasuyo, Engr. Datu Homer Mamasapano, a senior staff of the Cotabato City District Engineering Office here, said they were stunned by the death of Kasuyo whom they knew was healthy and regularly underwent medical examinations.Mamasapano immediately posted on his Facebook timeline the Qur’anic phrase inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun, which means from Allah we came, to him we shall return in Arabic, acknowledging Kasuyo’s fate as providential.Mamasapano, a scion of the Maguindanaon nobility, said their clan was saddened by the untimely demise of Kasuyo.Kasuyo, an ethnic Maguindanaon Muslim, belonged to a big Moro clan in Mamasapano town in the second district of Maguindanao.He was a decorated police officer who was last assigned at the Cotabato City police office before he retired from the PNP.Members of his immediately family said Kasuyo got so frustrated with Donaire’s loss to Magdaleno, whose real name isJesús Gabriel Jessie Magdaleno, of Mexican descent.The Donaire-Magdaleno bout Sunday morning (Manila time) in Las Vegas preceded the match between Manny Pacquiao and Jessie Vargas, where the senator-boxer, touted as the country’s pambansang kamao, won by a unanimous decision.Kasuyo is known as a dedicated, hardworking policeman while yet in the city police office. He was also involved in activities of local peace advocacy groups when he was still alive.
