Visit Tacurong as it shows rich culture, history
TACURONG CITY (Sept12/NDBC)
– Amid gloomy Thursday morning with slight to moderate winds blowing above this
city, this year’s Talakudong festival started smoothly with an Eucharistic
celebration at the city hall grounds, signalling the week-long celebration
here.
At about 8
a.m. Mayor Lina Montilla officially declared the opening of the 14th
Talakudong Festival, an annual event highlighting the accomplishments, success,
culture and history of Tacurong City.
This year’s
theme is Talakudongand Ipasundayag ang
Imo Katahum” (Talakudongand Show Your Beauty).
A parade around
the down town area showed the participants intheir
lavishly decorated talakudong” (headgears).Started in
2001 and celebrated every year thereafter, the Talakudong field dances tell of
a story of how Tacurong City got its name. Kudong” means head gear wore by
early settlers of this town, then. It was then thought that the early people of
Tacugong gave the Sultan of Buluan, now Buluan town in Maguindanao, a golden kudong”
as a gift for helping establish peace and development in the area.
The annual celebration
is not complete without a story telling depicted in a dance of how this
bustling city came into being.
Montilla vowed
for a more colourful and historic celebration with various activities showing
the rich culture of an emerging city in the SOCCSKSARGEN region.
Among the
activities include Igpat sang Kamera Photo Contest” from September 11-18,
Dogs’ Day Tacurong Sports Center and Kantahan ng Kabataan at the City Hall
Grounds on September 12 Sikad Talakudong-Bicycle Tour and Scooter-Motorcross
at the Integrated Public Terminal on Sept. 13 Talakudong Half Marathon at the
City Hall Grounds on September 14 and Dancesport Competition and
Panami-ay-Painting and Salakot Decorating Contest on September 15 at the Old
Municipal Building.
Also
highlighting the event is the Lin-ay sang Talakudong 2014 (Mutya ng Tacurong)
on September 16.The Hinampang events are for the sports and adventure lovers which include Inter-agency/Barangay
Basketball Tournament which on August 15 and end September 10 as well as the
Talakudong Inter-agency Volleyball Tournament, which started on August 26 and culminate
on September 18.
In the morning
of Sept. 18, Mayor Montilla will close the festival with her State of the City
