Village execs in troubled Sultan Kudarat town voluntarily yield loose firearms
SULTAN KUDARAT -- Barangay officials in a politically-hostile town in Sultan Kudarat province surrendered 28 military-type firearms to the police on Sunday.Senior Superintendent Raul Supiter of the Sultan Kudarat provincial police said Monday the firearms that leaders in eight barangays in Palimbang turned in were comprised of one M203 rifle fitted with a grenade launcher, M16 rifles, .30 caliber M1 Garand rifles and gauge 12 shotguns.Supiter said the eight barangays --- Namat, Kisek, Kidayan, Maganao, Malatunol, Akol, Lebua and Butril --- accounts for most number of vendetta clan feuds in the seaside Palimbang town.He said the owners of the unlicensed firearms agreed to turn them in through the intercession of Palimbang’s acting vice mayor,Amil Pangansayan.The incumbent mayor and vice mayor of Palimbang have both abandoned their posts after combined police and military teams found unlicensed firearms in their houses during separate raids last year.The two officials have since remained at large.
