Studyand Kidapawan soil less absorptive
KIDAPAWAN CITY
(Sept. 15/NDBC) – A study conducted by the Community Environment and Natural
Resources (CENRO) office showed Kidapawan City’s soil has been getting less
absorptive.
Ming Cariga,
CENRO chief, said the study was conducted after rampaging waters swept through
the city’s eight villages, a first in the city’s history, Thursday night.
Cariga said apart
from the heavy rainfall, the poor absorptive capacity of Kidapawan's soil was
one of the reasons of the flash floods that affected some 306 families.
Cariga
explained absorptive capacity is the ability of the land to absorb water from
rain. Cariga said trees
are the major players of absorption of water from the soil.
The more
trees (in an area), the better absorption capacity (it will have), added
Cariga.
Because of
this reality, CENRO together with local authorities are closely monitoring the
illegal logging activities in Kidapawan City and in North Cotabato as a whole.
Cariga said CENRO is
also planning to reconcile the General Management Plan of Kidapawan City
government and the 40 Barangays of the city to strengthen the campaign against
illegal logging and mobilize the community to plant more trees. (NDBC)
