Number of NorCot scholarship aspirants increase, official says
COTABATO CITY -- Applicants for the college scholarship
program of the provincial government of North Cotabato has doubled from the original target of 316senior high school students set to graduate this school year.
Norito Mazo, scholarship
program coordinator for the provincial government, said only 316 scholarship slots will
be available for the incoming school year as the same number of college
scholars are set to graduate this year.
The provincial government is subsidizing
the studies of 1,179 scholars enrolled in various colleges and universities in
the province and outside, Mazo said.
The college scholarship program is open
to poor but deserving students of North Cotabato Province, whose parents do not earn
higher than P40,00 a year and who have no grades below 80 percent.
Applicants are required to write a
letter addressed to Governor Emmylou Taliño-Mendoza expressing their intent to
avail of the scholarship. They also need to submit their latest grades, a
Certificate of Good Moral Character, a photocopy of their birth certificate
from the National Statistics Office, latest income tax returns of their parents
as proof of income and a Barangay Clearance as proof of residency.
Applicants who pass the basic
requirements would have to take a written examination to be held simultaneously
in the three congressional districts of the province on Febuary 16.
Examination venue for applicants from
District 1 would be Midsayap Pilot Elementary School, the Provincial Gymnasium
in Amas, Kidapawan City for applicants from District 2 and Barangay Poblacion B
in M’lang for District 3 applicants.
Those who pass the examination would
still have to undergo a one-on-one interview at a later date.
Mazo added that Gov. Mendoza has set a
budget of P3 million for next school year’s scholarship program.
Aside from the college scholarship, the
provincial government is also giving a P700 subsidy to senior high school
students in the province who are taking the Techical-Vocational and Livelihood
(TVL) Strand.
