North Cotabato village chair, aide slain in ambush
CARMEN, North
Cotabato –- Manhunt had been launched against gunmen who ambushed
and killed a village chairperson here and his aide Friday night in what police
believed was motivated by robbery and personal grudge, police said today.
Chief
Inspector Julius Malcontento, the Carmen town police chief, identified the
slain village official as Renato Ortiz, the chairperson of Barangay Gen. Luna
and his aide and farm caretaker, Rey Nobleza.
Malcontento
said the victims were on board a motorbike heading for home at 5:45 p.m. when
they were ambushed in Sitio Tabulon, Barangay Gen. Luna, Carmen, North
Cotabato.
He was in his
sling bag more or less P100,000 cash and the family said it was missing and
believed taken by the suspects, Malcontento said of Chairperson Luna.
Responding
police from Carmen police office found the two lying dead in a roadside rice
field with gunshot wounds in the head and body.
Luna sustained
eight gunshot wounds while Nobleza had nine bullet injuries, Malcontento said.
The official said
Luna’s family believed robbery was one of the motives because the cash was
stolen. The family also believed it was work related.
