Maguindanao flood victims rise to 180,000
COTABATO CITY
(Sept. 6/NDBC) – The number of affected families in the weeklong floods that
hit Maguindanao’s low lying communities rose to 181,800 persons, the Provincial
Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (RDRRMC) said Saturday morning.
A total of
35,804 families were affected but majority of whom remained in their respective
homes and did not evacuate, hoping water will recede soon.
On Friday, the
Sangguniang Panglalawigan, in its special session, passed a resolution putting
the province under state of calamity after 26 of its 36 municipalities were
flooded.
Two persons
have died due to inclement weather related incidents the past week in the
upland towns of North and South Upi, Maguindanao.
A four year
old boy died in a landslide in Barangay Blensong, Upi, Maguindanao while a
34-year-old farmer drowned while crossing a river in Barangay Kuya, South Upi at
the height of heavy downpour.
The PDRRMC
said flooded towns were Ampatuan Ampatuan, Datu Salibo, Sultan sa Barongis, Rajah
Buayan, Datu Abdullah Sangki, Datu Montawal, Sultan Kudarat, Paglat, Northern
Kabuntalan, Kabuntalan Mother, Sultan Mastura, Talitay, Mangudadatu, Pandag, Buluan,
SK Pendatun, Datu Odin Sinsuat, Datu Montawal, Pagalungan, Datu PIang, Shariff
Saydona, Mamasapano, Shariff Aguak, North Upi and South Upi.
Board Member
Bobby Katambak told Radyo Bida the provincial government can now legally use
its calamity funds to assist affected families. (NDBC)
