Jovito Salonga, anti-Marcos, anti-US bases, dies
After battling various ailments for three years, one of the popular anti-Marcos leaders in Philippine politics,Jovito Salonga, has died, the Philippine media reported Thursday.Salonga was to celebrate his 96th birthday in June.Supreme Court spokesman Atty. Theodore Te broke the news in the social media through histwitter account. He posted at past 5 p.m.and Paalam Ka Jovy Salonga. He was the last candidate for president that I voted for and in my opinion, with Ka Pepe, the best president we never got. When the first free general elections after martial law was conducted in 1992,Salonga ran for president but lost.Salonga's most popular photo was when he banged the gavel in September 2001, as Senate President, to declare that the RP-US military bases treaty had to end after the treaty was defeated. He voted, along with 11 other senators, against the extension of military bases stay in the Philippines.
