COTABATO CITY --Close to 300 stray dogs had been snared
by the Cotabato City veterinary office in three months of operations meant to
stop the spread of the rabies and protect residents against potentially deadly
dog bites.

Of the number, 20 have been retrieved by
owners, according to Dr. Robert Malcontente, DVM, who heads the city’s
veterinary office.

Malcontento said their campaign to
strictly implement City Ordinance 4482 which institutionalizes the campaign
against rabies and stray dogs in the city and promotes responsible dog
ownership, kicked off in October last year.

Malcontento said they normally start
their dog-catching operations at five in the morning, adding they also operate
at night, in coordination with barangay officials.

Sa request ng mga kapitan,
nagsisimula kami ng gabi. Alas syete hanggang alas nuwebe, Malcontento
explained.

Dog owners who wish to retrieve their
impounded pets must first pay the fine of P500 for neglect as mandated by law.
Dogs with diseases, those that are unwated and vicious are subjected to
disposal. Other dogs are given, upon request, to veterinary schools and
students for educational purposes.

Malcontento said the City Pound is also
open to people who want to adopt a dog to help decongest the pound. Those
interested to adopt a dog as pet will undergo a background check to see if they
have adequate space for the dog to live in.

For those who are willing to
adopt, pinahihintulutan naman namin yung mga aso na qualified pa na i-adopt,
Malcontento said.

The City Pound is located in the old
slaughter house compound in Pansacala Street, Cotabato City. (Khrizia Villa/NDU
