COTABATO CITY –
A Grade-11 student of Mindanao State University (MSU) Gen. Santos City Campus has
shown his expertise in statistics by capturing the top prize of the 1st
Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) Stat Quiz, PSA officials today said.

Bennete James
F. Valencia of MSU-GenSan Campus, bested 13 other provincial and city
participants to the Quiz Show held at South Seas Mall complex on Monday.

Ryan Joshua D.
Vergara of the General Santos City National High School was adjudged 1st
runner while Laurence L. Pajarillo of Koronadal National Comprehensive High
School was declared 2nd runner up winner.

Valencia was
coached by Shelmark A. Acosta while Vergara and Pajarillo were mentored by Sherwin
P. Uy and Louie L. Palete, respectively.

Lawyer Maqtahar
L. Manulon, PSA-12 regional director, said the PSA central office has
temporarily deferred the conduct of the annual Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ)
in 2016 because of the implementation of the senior high school in the country
by the Department of Education.

To sustain the
series of PSQs and continue the advocacy for statistical awareness and
appreciation among students, the PSA-12 has organized and spearheaded the
conduct of the 1st PSA STAT QUIZ in the SOCCSKSARGEN region.

According to
Manulon, the 1st PSA Stat Quiz is a contest designed to test the
knowledge on statistics of Grade 11 students enrolled in private and public
secondary/high school institutions in the SOCCSKSARGEN region.

He added that
except for a few modifications, the PSA 12 has maintained the three-fold objectives
of the regular PSQ.

These are 1)
Assess the competency and the skills of Grade 11 Senior High School students in
statistics 2) Promote, enhance, and still awareness and appreciation of the
importance and value of science, statistics in particular, among the students,
and 3) generate public awareness on the importance of statistics in all
development-planning activities and win overall support for all government
statistical activities.

Manulon said Valencia,
Vergara and Pajarillo received P7,000, P5,000 and P3,000, respectively. Aside from the cash prizes, winners also
received trophies, medals and certificates of recognition. Their respective
coaches were also awarded with cash prizes.

Certificates
of participation were given to all contestants, their coaches and the high
schools they represented.(The participants to the 1st PSA Stat Quiz in Cotabato City on Dec. 6, 2016) sand//scontent.fceb2-2.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/15356654_1315748791789228_8876285964514059722_n.jpg?oh=d21266ca0d2afe5708837ebd397cf9a2andampoe=58F18049
