Flash floods submerge 50 homes in Koronadal City
KORONADAL CITY -- Light to
moderate rains brought about by Habagat in Mindanao triggered flash
floods in a mountain village here that displaced about 50 families, disaster
officials said.
Speaking over DXOM-AM Radyo Bida Koronadal,
Cyrus Urbano, Koronadal City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council
action officer, said continuous rains flooded the drainage canal along portions
of Koronadal City-Gen. Santos City highway on Sunday night and the water
inundated houses near the national highway in Barangay Carpetner Hill.
We have about 50 homes that were
submerged but the water quickly subsided, Urbano said, adding the the
city government will extend assistance this morning. It was not only water but with mud
that entered several homes, Urbano added.
No one was hurt or injured in the calamity. Residents blamed the on going construction
of drainage system along the highway by the Department of Public Works and
Highways. But Urbano explained the drainage system
was one of the flood control projects in the city that aims to save communities
from floods during heavy downpour.Barangay Carpenter served as catch basin of
flood waters that emanate from Barangay Saravia which is located higher than
Barangay Carpenter and flooding was a perennial problem.
That
is the reason why DPWH has been working on flood control projects, the
disaster official explained. sand//scontent.fmnl4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14522982_1072338932872915_4696666273550533295_n.jpg?oh=b8795cf1eb7d76d4c78e1cb5db15d80dandampoe=589D1DF2 sand//scontent.fmnl4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14492609_1072339146206227_3149095848868775368_n.jpg?oh=fdb1e7d3fdc482cf96721d02d617ca8dandampoe=586D8AFC sand//scontent.fmnl4-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/14568109_1072338929539582_6812636379760395294_n.jpg?oh=70b4be5106f1eb5e2f1020c64ff91cdaandampoe=58AC6941
