Farmer foils another bombing attempt in North Cotabato
PIGCAWAYAN,
North Cotabato - An alert purok leader prevented a bombing attempt here by
quickly reporting to the nearest police detachment of his discovery at a
roadside in Barangay South Manuangan Tuesday morning.
Interviewed by DXMS Radyo Bida,Senior
Inspector Donald Cabigas, Pigcawayan police chief, said the improvised explosive
device (IED) was discovered by Barangay South Manuangan Purok leader Godofredo
Piala at about 6 p.m.
He saw two men
on a motorbike leaving something at the roadside. I asked them what they are doing, they said
they just urinated,” he said in the vernacular.
As I passed
by them I took a glimpse of the bag beside them and saw cellphone, electrical wiring
and what look like a mortar,” he said. The
two men appeared to be leaving so I reminded them of the bag, but the two sped
away, Piala said. Cabigas said
the IED could be intended for other areas but the suspects balked after seeing
police officers were conducting inspection at a checkpoint about 200 meters
away.
Maybe due to
the presence of police officers at the checkpoint, they decided to abandon the
IED at the road side and it was found by the purok leader,” Cabigas said.
Traffic along
the national highway from Cotabato City to North Cotabato was stalled for about
two hours while bomb experts inspect the area.
After confirming the IED, bomb experts detonated the explosive at past 8
a.m.
It was the fourth
bombing attempt in North Cotabato this month.
Two of them occurred in Pikit town that toppled down two transmission
towers and one in Kabacan public market Monday night.”
