Cotabato City disasters team working 24/7
COTABATO
CITY (Sept. 13/NDBC) – Disaster officials in the city remained on alert as
rains continue up stream of Rio Grand de Mindanao and in the provinces of North
and South Cotabato.
Cynthia
Guiani-Sayadi, Cotabato City administrator, said the City Disaster Risk Reduction
and Management Council (CDRRMC) and personnel from the city social welfare
office are working 24/7.
We are not
letting our guards down, anytime water level of the city’s tributaries might
rise again, we must be prepared,” she told DXMS Radyo Bida-Cotabato.
Eighteen
low lying villages were submerged by flood waters that also inundated several
villages in nearby Maguindanao and North Cotabato provinces the past week.
Of the 18
barangays, only the village of Rosary Heights 6 have evacuees, numbering about
41 families or 205 persons.
The flood
victims of 17 other barangays were home-based” or did not evacuate, Sayadi said.
She said about
942 families were home-based” or 33,425 persons.
We are
continuously monitoring the water level in the city’s periphery,” Sayadi said,
adding that water is expected to rise due to heavy down pour in North Cotabato
Friday.
Flash floods
hit Kidapawan City’s 18 barangays Thursday night, affected about 270
families. Floods have receded there and
flood waters are expected to flow toward the Maguindanao marshland and
eventually to Rio Grande de Mindanao and Cotabato City.
Sayadi said
two excavators are also working 24/7 near Delta bridge along Rio Grande and
another in the mouth of the country’s second largest river.
Unlike in
previous floods, no casualty was reported this time in the city.
Sayadi said
affected families have already received relief assistance from the city relief
and aid agencies. (NDBC)
