2 kids swept away by rampaging flood waters in S. Cotabato
KORONADAL CITY – Two children on their way ome from school were drowned Wednesday afternoon
in a river in the upland town of Lake Sebu, South Cotabato, disaster officials
said.
Roberto
Bagong, the municipal disaster risk reduction and management council action
officer, said the two male children, aged 8 and 9 years old, were crossing the
LamLahak River in Barangay Lamlahak, near the town Poblacion when they were
swept away by rampaging waters.
They were
home-bound from Lamlhak Elemetary School when the incident happened at past 5
p.m.
Bagong said
the children regularly cross the river in coming to school and returning home.
There was
light to moderate rain in Barangay Lamlahak but heavy downpour was observed up
stream, Bagong said in a phone interview.
Rampaging waters swept away the children who were unaware of the sudden
rise of water level, he added.
The 9 year old
boy was retrieved two kilometers away downstream Wednesday night while the
other kid was found the morning after at 6 a.m. Friday. (Edwin O. Fernandez)
