Telecoms technician jailed for grenade prank

COTABATO CITY --- He landed in jail for a malicious, unlawful prank.

Telecommunications technician Eric Daque is now detained, to be prosecuted for violation of Presidential Decree 1727 that outlawed malicious spreading of deceptive information such as false threats to set off an explosive or any similar deadly devices.

10 soldiers hurt in Basilan Army truck mishap

BASILAN - More than 10 membzers of the 17th Scout Ranger Company were hurt when the truck they were riding figured in a highway misha at 11 a.m. in Sitio Baroy, Lamitan City.

Initial report from Lamitan PNP, two Army truck loaded with scout rangers were heading to the outskirt of the city when the lead vehicle fell off a roadside drainage canal.

Imported cigarettes seized in Sarangani

GENERAL SANTOS CITY --- The police seized 25 boxes of imported cigarettes intercepted in Maitum town in Sarangani while en route to somewhere in the province Thursday.

Brig. Gen. Alexander Tagum, director of the Police Regional Office-12, said Friday the contraband was in a van that policemen impounded when they found out that it carried Casablanca cigarettes, for delivery to somewhere in the municipality.

236 fire-stricken families in Basilan receive cash assistance

COTABATO CITY --- More than a hundred families in Isabela City whose houses were razed by fire received P20,000 cash each from the provincial government of Basilan.

The cash assistance was facilitated last week by Basilan Gov. Jim Salliman, according to a statement dispatched by his office Monday.

It said 173 families residing in the fire-stricken villages in the adjoining Port Area and Kaumpurnah Zone 1 in Isabela City got P20,000 cash support each from the provincial government.

The two densely-populated areas were hit by fire early this month.

Basilan has new provincial police director

COTABATO CITY --- The incoming police director of Basilan assumed Thursday, replacing a predecessor whose accomplishments in law-enforcement earned citations.

Col. Pedro Martirez, Jr. was installed as new Basilan police director by Brig. Gen. Eden Ugale, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, replacing Col. Rodrigo Maramo.

Maramo was at the helm of the Basilan provincial police for 13 months.

Woman killed in landmine blast in Basilan

COTABATO CITY --- A 47-year-old ethnic Yakan woman was killed in a landmine blast on Tuesday morning in Sumisip town in Basilan.

Major Faisal Tandico, chief of the Sumisip Municipal Police Station, on Wednesday identified the fatality as Junayra Saad, who died on the spot from blast injuries.

Tandico said Saad stepped on a tripwire attached to the triggering mechanism of an improvised explosive device while on her way to a creek in an interior area in Barangay Benembengan, setting off the explosive.

2 dead in separate suicide incidents

KORONADAL CITY --- Two residents killed themselves  in separate incidents Wednesday in nearby Norala, South Cotabato Wednesday. 

The Police Regional Office-12 identified the fatalities as Noel Montes Morales, 51, and the 49-year-old Joel Jayawon Porte, residents of Barangays San Jose and Kibid in Noralla town, respectively.

Noralla is an agricultural town in South Cotabato province.

Morales and Porte hanged themselves using ropes Wednesday, according to PRO-12.

Region 12 extends help to typhoon-stricken Region 13

GENERAL SANTOS CITY --- The Dept. of the Interior and Local Government-12 and other cooperating line agencies dispatched Tuesday 24 vehicles, including dump trucks, full of relief provisions for typhoon-stricken areas in the Caraga Region.

The humanitarian mission is a common initiative of the Regional Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases and the Regional Task Force on COVID-19.

The project is dubbed “Pamaskong Handog ng Dose sa Trese,” which, in context, means relief support from Region 12 to Region 13.

MANILA – Manila Archbishop Jose Cardinal Advincula on Friday called for solidarity with the people affected by Typhoon Odette.

In an interview with Radio Veritas, Advincula urged the Filipinos to unite in responding to the needs of the people in Visayas and Mindanao and show the true spirit of Christmas.

"We are with you as you rise, as you face a new morning; I urge all to sympathize and care for our brothers and sisters who have been devastated by the storm, let us help them recover and begin again," he said.
