VP Leny’s Basilan project launched
COTABATO CITY --- Vice President Leni Robredo and Mayor Rose Furigay led Wednesday the kickoff rite for the construction of the Angat Buhay Yakan Cloth Weaving Center in Barangay Buahan in Lamitan City.
Lamitan City is the capital of Basilan island province that also covers Isabela City and 11 towns.
The setting up of the weaving center, where skilled weavers are to produce the now globally marketed multi-colored Tenun Yakan fabric, is a joint initiative of the Office of the Vice President and the Lamitan local government unit.
Robredo also met with other provincial leaders, among them Isabela City Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, Gov. Jim Salliman and Deputy Speaker Mujiv Hataman in one of her engagements in the island province on Wednesday.
While in Lamitan City, Vice President Robredo also visited the iconic artificial “Tulip Garden” fashioned from recycled non-toxic wastes and now frequented by tourists from around Basilan, from Zamboanga City and nearby areas in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
Her visit to Basilan was jointly hosted by the Isabela and Lamitan LGUs, the provincial government and the office of Hataman, the lone congressional representative of the province.
