2 in gang behind deadly Basilan ambush now detained

COTABATO CITY - Two of the gunmen behind Saturday’s ambush in Ungkaya Pukan that left a soldier and a policeman dead had surrendered and confessed to their involvement in the atrocity.

Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza, director of the Police Regional Office-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, told reporters Thursday Adzmin Manjapal and Mudzni Sapau yielded last Wednesday to Army Brig. Gen. Alvin Luzon of the 101st Infantry Brigade.

Tornado destroy 30 houses in seaside Zamboanga City village

COTABATO CITY - A tornado from the sea ripped and blew away the roof of 30 houses in the coastal Barangay Sinunuc in Zamboanga City on Wednesday.

In separate reports Thursday, the office of Mayor John M. Dalipe and the Zamboanga City Police Office said emergency responders were immediately dispatched to extend relief interventions to 32 affected families.

P13-M worth shabu seized in Sulu entrapment operation

COTABATO CITY - Anti-narcotics agents seized P13 million worth of shabu from two alleged dealers, one of them a former member of the Moro National Liberation Front, entrapped Maimbung, Sulu Wednesday.

Christian Frivaldo, director of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency 12, told reporters Thursday the duo, Janang Bairulla, 43, and the 31-year-old Anton Jubail, both Tausugs, fell in a sting in the town proper of Maimbung, laid with the help of the police.

BARMM, Basilan governor embark on housing for ex-Abu terrorists

COTABATO CITY - The Bangsamoro government and the office of the governor of Basilan are to initially construct 39 houses for reforming former members of the Abu Sayyaf terror group who are now being reintroduced to mainstream society.

Basilan Gov. Jim Hataman Salliman said Monday he and Bangsamoro Local Government Minister Naguib Gani Sinarimbo signed last Friday a memorandum of agreement (MOA) binding their offices to cooperate in implementing the housing project in the province.

“We are now in the process of choosing a site for this housing project,” Salliman said.

4 dead in Kidapawan, Davao Sur highway accidents 

COTABATO CITY - Four people, among them a four-year-old child, perished in separate road accidents in Kidapawan City and in Hagonoy, Davao del Sur on Sunday.

The first to die from the two accidents was Kimberly Pamplona Villastique and her four-year-old son, Leo Mark, who were in their vegetable vending stall along a portion of the Cotabato-Davao Highway in Barangay Ilomavis in Kidapawan City in Cotabato province that a wayward dump truck rammed, killing them both on the spot.

Ex-village exec dead, 2 nabbed in Lanao Sur PDEA operation

COTABATO CITY - Anti-narcotics agents shot dead an uncooperative former barangay councilor and arrested his two cohorts in an entrapment operation in Wao, Lanao del Sur.

Christian Frivaldo, director of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, told reporters Friday their agents and policemen were forced to neutralize Samanodin Pangnalan after he drew a pistol when he sensed that he and his two companions had sold shabu to non-uniformed government operatives disguised as drug dependents.

Bystanders seriously hurt in Lanao Norte gun attack

COTABATO CITY - Two villagers were seriously wounded in a gun attack Thursday in Lala, Lanao del Norte.

Major Allan Oniana, municipal police chief, said Friday the victims, Mila Lacasa Atentista and Marjo Bondaug Ramas, who sustained gunshot wounds in different parts of their bodies, are now both in a hospital.

Atentista and Ramas were talking to each other along a stretch of a highway in Barangay Raw-an when two men riding a motorcycle together pulled over close to them, pulled out pistols from their waists and opened fire.

Seaside town’s “marinated bangsi industry” thriving

GENERAL SANTOS CITY - What three women in Maitum, Sarangani started as an experiment in the early 1980s due to the abundance of “flying fish” from the sea along the municipality is now a thriving industry, a source of income for local residents.

Maitum, a seaside town at the border of Sarangani and Sultan Kudarat provinces, is now famous for its “marinated bangsi,” sold in markets and wet sections of grocery stores in malls in cities and provincial centers in central Mindanao.

Child dead, 23 downed by expired canned sardines, corned beef

COTABATO CITY --- An 11-year-old child died while 23 others were hospitalized Friday after eating expired canned sardines and corned beef they found in a vacant lot in Zamboanga City, dumped by a dealer, already unfit for human consumption.

In separate statements released on Friday afternoon, the Zamboanga City Health Office and the Zamboanga City Police Office identified the food poisoning fatality as Gabriel Agdatan Sumulang, whose cadaver is now in a mortuary.

COTABATO CITY --- Life is back to normal for more than 400 villagers at the upland border of North Cotabato and Davao del Sur provinces that communist rebels had abused in years past.

The barangays where they reside, once bastions of the New Peoples’ Army now tagged by the Armed Forces and the Philippine National Police merely as a “communist terrorist group,” had been declared “insurgency free” as a result of interventions by local government units, the provincial police in both provinces and the Army’s 39th Infantry Battalion.
