COTABATO CITY --- The two Filipinos missing after high waves battered on July 17 the Freedom Beach in Phuket, Thailand are both residents of this city.

Rescuers have still been searching for Noah Ibay, Jr., 40, and his companion, the 29-year-old Angelo Bian Rafael Cortez, according to Thai online news reports.

The duo was among 13 friends from this city who left for a vacation in Thailand early this week.

Relatives of Ibay, whose mother is a senior official in central Mindanao of the Department of Agrarian Reform, told reporters here they have requested the embassy of Thailand in Metro Manila to provide them periodic updates on efforts to find them.

Uncooperative weather has reportedly stymied the search and rescue missions.

Ibay’s uncle, Mayor Cahar Ibay of Parang town in the first district of Maguindanao, said his nephew was not even swimming when big waves hit the beach where they were whiling away time along with Cortez and their companions.

“We are praying, hoping Thai rescuers could find them both,” the mayor said.
