ISABELA CITY --- Officials launched Thursday an engineering intervention meant to stop the perennial flooding in the city’s commercial hub during rainy days.

Residents of Isabela City have been ranting for years about the quick inundation of several blocks downtown after every heavy downpour.

It is a nagging problem inherited by newcomers Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman and her running mate during the May 13 polls, Vice Mayor Kifli Salliman.

The two neophyte city officials and Basilan’s newly-elected congressman, Mujiv Hataman, together led Thursday’s kickoff rite for the flood control projects.

Engineers are to build drainage arteries in the surroundings of the oft-flooded areas that would lead rainwaters to Isabela City’s coast to drain into the sea.

Isabela City is a seaport town, an old historic settlement named after Santa Isabel de Portugal by the Spaniards.

Isabela City was once a component-town of Basilan that became a city through Republic Act 9023 authored by former Congressman Gerry Salapuddin.

The RA 9023 was ratified via a plebiscite administered by the poll body in its more than 40 barangays on April 25, 2001.

Salapuddin, who is now at the helm of the Southern Philippines Development Authority, said he is thankful to Turabin-Hataman and to Salliman for  focusing attention on the flooding problem hounding Isabela City for a longtime.

Salapuddin said he did not resent having campaigned for the duo when they ran for mayor and vice mayor of Isabela City during the recent election period.
