KIDAPAWAN CITY - The Commission on Population and Development (Popcom-12) launched its “SPEAK-UP” bookmarks, a gender-responsive Information-Education-Communication (IEC) material for adolescents and youth, during the 3rd Quarter Local Government Population Management Conference (LGPMC) at Hoff’s Mansion Inn, Kidapawan City.

The event was attended by the population officers and workers from the cities of General Santos, Kidapawan, Koronadal and Cotabato and from the provinces of South Cotabato, North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat.

The “SPEAK-UP” bookmarks aims to respond to the current challenges facing young people today, of which many are gender-based.

The materials contain messages on fighting depression, saying no to bullying, rising from life’s challenges, preventing teen pregnancies, and preventing STIs including HIV and AIDS.

As part of the finalization processes, bookmarks were pre-tested among the selected youth in Koronadal City and General Santos City.

Youth’s perspective was taken into consideration which contributed to the improvement of the material.

During the launching, sets of SPEAK UP ringed-bookmarks were handed over to local population partners for distribution on the conduct of their Adolescent Health and Development (AHD) related activities.

SPEAK UP shirts were also given to those who attended the launching.

PopCom-Soccsksargen awarded Ms. Maria Madel Palen, a peer educator from the Teen Support Group in General Santos City, for her significant contribution in designing the lay-out of the SPEAK UP bookmarks, that were developed by the Gender-Responsive Population Strategies (GRPOPSs)-SOCCSKSARGEN team.

Ms. Palen volunteered as the graphic artist of SPEAK UP GAD-IEC materials.

PopCom 12 plans to reproduce and distribute the bookmarks and shirts for the adolescents and youth all over SOCCSKSARGEN, during AHD activities.

PopCom 12 remains steadfast in its commitment to spread correct information on adolescent health and development.

It encourages the younger generation to Speak Up, Stand Up and Reach Out amidst life challenges, and eventually become happy, healthy, and productive citizens of society and nation in general.
