Phivolcs records 4 aftershocks after Makilala earthquake

KIDAPAWAN CITY - The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) recorded four aftershocks of the magnitude 5 tremor that hit Makilala, North Cotabato today.

In a bulletin, Phivolcs said the first quake came at 9:55 a.m. and was traced 16 kilometers west of Makilala. It was tectonic in origin and depth of 4 kilometers.

The first aftershock came at 10:04 a.m. with magnitude 3 and at 10:26 a.m. at magnitude 1. At 10:43 a.m. a magnitude 2.2 was recorded.  At 12:53, Phivolcs recorded another 1.7 magnitude aftershock near Tulunan town.

After the first quakes hit Makilala, Mayor Armando Quibod suspended classes in all levels both in public and in private schools.

Students of Matalam National High School also rushed outside the building following the tremor this morning.

Classes in Kidapawan City were also suspended by Mayor Joseph Evangelista as a result of the tremors.

The provincial and municipal disaster risk reduction and management offices are still conducting validation and assessment on the extent of damages.
