North Cotabato authorities brace for aftershocks

NORTH COTABATO --- Classes have been suspended in Kidapawan City and nearby towns in anticipation of possible aftershocks following a 5.3 magnitude earthquake Tuesday night.

City education officials announced the temporary suspension of classes via the popular Catholic station dxND in Kidapawan City, capital of North Cotabato province.

No one was reported hurt in the tremor that shook the city and nearby towns, according to Kidapawan City’s local government unit.

Schools in North Cotabato towns close to Kidapawan City have also been suspended.

Authorities reported on Wednesday morning that 10 aftershocks were felt after the earthquake was felt at 8:36 p.m. Tuesday, causing panic among residents of Kidapawan City and nearby towns.

The earthquake was also felt in parts of central Mindanao’s adjoining South Cotabato, Sarangani, Maguindanao and Davao del Sur provinces and in the cities of Cotabato, Tacurong, Koronadal and General Santos.
