COTABATO CITY -- A policeman from North Cotabato is in critical condition after being hit on the head and body following an ambush in Maguindanao on Tuesday.

Col. Arnold Santiago, Maguindanao police chief, identified the victim as Patrolman Jeniel Malumbay Gonzalgo, 30, of Antipas, North Cotabato and assigned to the 1203rd Regional Mobile Force Battalion of Police Regional Office–12.

Initial reports said Gonzalgo was passing through Barangay Galakit, Pagalungan, Maguindanao, around 4 p.m. on board his white multicab vehicle when overtaken and fired upon by gunmen, who were riding-in-tandem on a motorcycle.

The attackers fled to the interior section of Pagalungan after the incident, leaving their wounded victim behind.

Responding policemen brought Gonzalgo to the Cruzado Medical Hospital but was later transferred to an undisclosed infirmary in Kidapawan City due to the severity of his wounds.

Recovered from the ambush site were empty shells from a cal. 45 pistol.

Police probers are still looking into the case.
