COTABATO CITY  – Rampaging floodwater in the upland town of Sultan Kudarat provincie claimed the lives of a Manobo mother and her 4-year-old daughter Tuesday morning, officials said.

The Sen. Ninoy Aquino (SNA), Sultan Kudarat municipal disaster risk reduction and management council (MDRRMC), reported that the mother-daughter tandem was crossing a small Basag River in Barangay Poblacion when huge volume of water came rushing down and carried away the victims.

SNA Mayor Randy Ecija Jr identified the victims as Ailyn Gogo, 46, and her daughter “Baby” who both belonged to Indigenous Peoples (IP) Manobo tribe.

Ecija said rescue workers found the bodies of the victims at mid-afternoon downstream of Basag river.

Following the incident, Ecija directed all village officials to monitor water level of rivers in their areas so warnings could be aired and prevent people from getting drowned or taken by rampaging waters.

He said there was no rain in the Poblacion, only upstream and in the mountains of SNA.

Due to overnight rain in the forests, water came rushing down to communities, including Barangay Poblacion in SNA.

The LGU has already extended assistance to the victims’ families. (FC)
