COTABATO CITY --- A Maguindanao solon has filed a bill seeking an increase in salary of new teachers from P19,077 to P36,409 monthly.

Rep. Esmael Mangudadatu said Thursday his proposed measure, House Bill 3539, is a good investment for quality education that Filipinos across the country, particularly the impoverished children in remote areas, need.

“I grew up in the barrios and have seen how teachers consecrated their life and honor to their profession. Those who work in troubled areas even put their lives on the line without complaining. They deserve an added premium for the good works,” Mangudadatu said.

He said newly-enlisted public school teachers only receive a government salary grade 11, or 19,077 monthly.

“It has to be upgraded from salary grade 11 to salary grade 19, or P36,409 monthly,”Mangudadatu said.

He said he has been trying to drumbeat the need to increase the salary of new teachers even when he was governor yet of Maguindanao for three consecutive terms that spanned from June 30, 2010 to June 30, 2019.

The bill Mangudadatu authored, also known as “The Public School Teacher’s Salary Increase Act,” shall cover all teaching personnel in government elementary and high school institutions in the country.
