KIDAPAWAN CITY --- Two of the 636 residents here afflicted with dengue fever in the past seven months died in the hospital, a report from the city government indicated.

One of the two fatalities was an eight-month-old infant.

The City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit (CESU) reported Thursday that this year’s number of recorded dengue cases was 235 percent higher than what were listed from January to early August last year.

The City Health Office has intensified its anti-dengue cleanup and information drive in all of the barangays here, a statement from the mayor’s office said.

Mayor Joseph Evangelista earlier directed administrators of private and government schools here to embark on massive sanitation drives in campuses to ensure the safety of elementary pupils, high school and college students from the mosquito-borne disease.

Evangelista said city health personnel are doing their best to address the high prevalence of dengue cases in Kidapawan City, the capital of North Cotabato.

North Cotabato has the highest number of dengue cases from among Region 12 provinces that include Sarangani, Sultan Kudarat and South Cotabato in the past seven months.
