Isabela City LGU cracks whip on unregistered motorcycles

ISABELA CITY --- Authorities impounded dozens of unregistered motorcycles in a continuing crackdown since last week to rid the streets of abusive motorists and criminals on bikes.

The motorcycles were seized by local officials and city police personnel in joint operations ordered by the new city mayor, Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, acting on complaints by residents.

The first-termer Turabin-Hataman, as mayor, chairs the inter-agency Isabela City peace and order council.

Isabela City is one of the two cities in Basilan, a province in the Bangsamoro region.

The city police and units of the Army’s 104th Brigade both supports the campaign of the city government against unregistered motorcycles, tricycles and other vehicles that proliferated in past years.

The city police have also apprehended and counseled a number of minors apprehended for driving motorcycles without driving licenses.

Major Arvin Encinas, spokesman of the Western Mindanao Command in nearby Zamboanga City, said Tuesday WestMinCom’s commander, Major Gen. Cirilito Sobejana, has ordered the 104th Brigade to help the Isabela City government carry out its law-enforcement activities.

“The 104th Brigade has been directed to help the city government achieve its peace and security goals,” Encinas said.

In a message Monday, Turabin-Hataman said she and Vice Mayor Kifli Salliman, also a newcomer, will focus on setting up streetlights in thoroughfares as part of the city government’s security efforts.

The mayor said she also has a plan to put up security surveillance cameras in strategic spots in Isabela City to deter criminal activities.
