PIKIT, Cotabato  – Five men, including the son of former Maguindanao governor, were killed in a shootout with soldiers at a checkpoint here Friday night.

Brig. Gen. Alfredo del Rosario, the commander of the 601st Infantry Brigade, said the victims fired at soldiers manning a checkpoint in Barnagay Inugog at about 9:30 p.m.

Del Rosario said the soldiers flagged down a gray Nissan Patrol (license plate LEM-521) as it approached the Pagalungan bridge for regular inspection.

“They fired at our soldiers who also returned fire,” Del Rosario said in a radio interview.

Pagalungan bridge separates the town of Pikit in North Cotabato and Pagalungan in Maguindanao.

Del Rosario identified one of the slain victims as Datu Hashim Matalam III, son of former Maguindanao Gov. Norodin Matalam. The identities of four others were not available as of posting.

Hashim was identified by his mother, Councilor Bai Noraisa Matalam of Pagalungan, Maguindanao.  Hashim was buried beside the tomb of his father in Sitio Tangila, Barangay Poblacion, Pagalungan.

Soldiers and Police Scene of the Crime Operatives found an Armalite rifle, a cal. 45 pistol, rifle grenade, hand grenade and spent and live ammunition inside the victims’ car.

No soldiers were killed or injured, del Rosario said.

Del Rosario said the soldiers were in heightened alert due to the brewing clan war involving commanders of Moro Islamic Liberation front (MILF) in the interior villages of Pikit that started Wednesday. (EOF)
