COTABATO CITY --- Officials helping address the southern secessionist problem got elated with the mention of the Mindanao peace process in the president’s State of the Nation Address Monday.

In separate statements Tuesday, Representatives Mujiv Hataman and Esmael Mangudadatu of Basilan and the second district of Maguindanao, respectively, both appreciated the commitment of President Rodrigo Duterte to sustain the gains of his diplomatic overtures with Mindanao’s Moro communities as mentioned in his SONA.

Duterte shepherded the Republic Act 11054, or the Bangsamoro Organic Law, that replaced in February the 29-year Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao with a Bangsamoro regional government as agreed by Malacañang and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

Hataman was former governor of the now defunct ARMM.

In his SONA, Duterte urged members of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, or BTA, to fast track the full activation of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The president said he wants the transition from ARMM to BARMM to proceed fast.

Hataman relinquished the ARMM leadership last February to the appointed BARMM Chief Minister Hadji Ahod Ebrahim in a symbolic rite that marked the start of the Bangsamoro government’s operation.

Ebrahim, chairman of the MILF’s central committee, is also the figurehead of the BTA, comprised of representatives from Moro communities and the government.

Mangudadatu, governor of Maguindanao for three terms that spanned through 2010 until June 30 this year, said Duterte’s mention of his Mindanao peace initiative in his SONA was a boost to efforts of setting up fully BARMM’s governance mechanisms.

Hataman and Mangudadatu together campaigned extensively for the approval of the BOL, the charter of BARMM, via a referendum in the ARMM provinces on January 21, 2019.

They separately told reporters via online Messenger that they voted for Taguig City Rep. Allan Peter Cayetano during Monday’s election of a speaker for the House of Representatives, convinced he would also help put a diplomatic closure to the now five-decade southern Moro issue.
