KIDAPAWAN CITY — Classes were suspended in Kabacan Pilot Elementary School (KPES) today due to knee-deep floods that penetrated several classrooms following an overnight heavy downpour that hit North Cotabato Tuesday.

Don David Saure, the town’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer (MDRRMO), said the heavy downpour resulted to Kabacan and Pulangi Rivers to overflow affecting the low-lying villages including the said school.

“Mayor Herlo Guzman as early as 5:30 am today ordered the class suspension due to floods affecting the school premises and classrooms,” Saure said.

Saure said the school campus was also submerged by at least knee-deep flood waters which is dangerous for elementary pupils especially that there are several open drainages that it can no longer be seen due to floods.

Some school properties were also affected including some reading materials, Saure added. Portions of Barangay Poblacion especially the major streets were also flooded.

Saure however said that flood waters are now starting to subside.

Meantime two low-lying villages of Upper Paatan and Cuyapon were also devastated by the flash floods.

In Barangay Cuyapon, Saure said at least 300 families or 1500 individuals were affected when flood waters penetrated their homes.

There are residents according to Saure that spent overnight in the village covered court for safety.

An estimated 50 hectares of newly planted rice fields and some in its vegetative stages were washed out by the floods. Saure cannot give the exact amount of damages as validation of crop damages are ongoing.

“Perhaps there are also crop damages in nearby villages. Our team is still doing validation as to extent of damages in other villages,” Saure said.

The disaster official said the LGU will extend assistance to the affected farmers and families once they completely submitted reports at the office of the town mayor.

Mayor Herlo Guzman on the other hand has instructed the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO) to proceed in the affected villages for immediate food pack assistance to the flood-stricken villages. (Williamor A. Magbanua)
