COTABATO CITY - Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) interim Chief Minister Ahod “Murad” Ebrahim renewed his call for moral governance during the celebration on Sunday here of the 2019 Eid’l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).

“Ills in society and public instrumentalities in the Bangsamoro region will surely fizzle out in an atmosphere of moral governance,” said Ebrahim, who also heads the 12,000-strong Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

Ebrahim said all residents, especially the workforce of the interim regional government will have to “sacrifice personal gains” for “good government to thrive” in a region plagued for decades by poverty, man-made and natural calamities like BARMM.

His call for “sacrifice” aptly jived with the rationale behind the annual celebration of Eid’l Adha, one of two important feats in Islam, marking the end of hajj (pilgrimage) in Saudi Arabia and reckoning the day when Prophet Ibrahim had attempted to sacrifice his son, Ismael, in a test for his loyalty to God in building Kaaba. Kaaba is the holy shrine being circumambulated by millions of hajj goers in Makkah (Mecca) in the Muslim kingdom.

Ebrahim said President Dutere has a standing commitment to “correct historical injustices” among the Bangsamoro people, but this would not be realized without the corresponding individual sacrifices of stakeholders.

Police estimated at least 5,000 officials and workers of BARMM and residents gathered Sunday morning for the Eid’l Adha congregational prayers inside the Bangsamoro government compound here.

In closing his brief message, Ebrahim assured the people of war-torn Marawi City, a BARMM component, of all-out support for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the city from the havocs of the May 23, 2017 siege by terror-bound militants and the ensuing five-month military reactions.

The interim BARMM bureaucracy will be fully constituted in January 2020 and by then “we shall inshaallah rebuild Marawi,” Ebrahim said.

Because Eid’l Adha celebration fell on Sunday, President Duterte declared the succeeding workday, Monday” as a non-working holiday nationwide.

The world’s estimated 1.8 billion Muslims celebrate Eid’l Adha every 10th of Zulhijja in the lunar calendar, marking the end of rituals in the Islamic pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

For current 3.5 million pilgrims converged in Saudi Arabia, with over 7,000 Filipino delegates, the act of slaughtering livestock (at least a sheep) will complete their hajj performance, which is one of five pillars of Islam.

Parts of the meat proceeds are cooked for consumption by pilgrims in the daylong feast often highlighted by eid or congregational prayers. Saudi authorities usually distribute the rest of meat to poor communities within and outside the Muslim kingdom.

Reports reaching the Bulletin said the reigning Dimaporos of Lanao del Norte have slaughtered 24 calves for the Eid’l Adha festivities, while the family of Maguindanao Rep. Esmael Mangudadatu replicated his family’s yearly tradition of offering at least seven roasted cows for feast celebrants.
