COTABATO CITY --- Another representative of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to the Bangsamoro parliament died of an illness Tuesday, the second since March.

Lawyer Abdul Dataya, an ethnic Maguindanaon, was one of 41 representatives of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to the 80-member parliament of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Dataya succumbed to a heart ailment Tuesday morning, according to his colleagues in the BARMM parliament.

The supposed speaker of the BARMM parliament, senior MILF leader Ghazali Jaafar, also died of a cardiovascular disease in March, before he could even preside over the maiden session of the ministerial group.

Jaafar passed away after the February transition from the now defunct Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao to BARMM following the January 21 plebiscite that resulted in the ratification of its charter, the Bangsamoro Organic Law, or Republic Act 11054.

Jaafar’s post in the BARMM parliament was taken over by another MILF representative, lawyer Ali Pangalian Balindong, former congressional representative of the second district of Lanao del Sur.

Abdullah Cusain, deputy executive secretary of BARMM Chief Minister Ahod Ebrahim, said Tuesday the region’s leadership and employees of its ministries are mourning the demise of Dataya.

Dataya hailed from Barangay Cudal in Pagalungan town in Maguindanao, birthplace of Islamic theologian Salamat Hashim, the founder of MILF.
