T'BOLI, South Cotabato  – At least 20 persons were killed, 15 of them on the spot, and more than ten were injured when a cargo truck from a beach party fell off a creek Tuesday morning.

Mayor Dibu Tuan of T’boli said all the victims were on board an Isuzu Forward cargo truck heading for home from a night swimming activity in Gen. Santos City when its brake system malfunctioned at 9 a.m. while negotiating a sharp curve in Barangay Lamsalome.

All the victims were from Surallah, South Cotabato and related by blood and by affinity, according to Mayor Tuan.

From Gen. Santos, the cargo truck took the GenSan-Tboli route instead of the regular Gen. Santos City-Koronadal City-Surallah highway.

Fifteen of the victims died on the spot, including several children, and five expired before arrival at Upper Valley Hospital in Surallah, South Cotabato.

Tuan said the number of fatalities could increase as many were critically injured.

Mayor Tuan said the truck was not fit for transporting people as it has been used as cargo truck for scrap metals and bottles.

Traffic investigators said truck driver Rodel Rabara, 41, escaped with minor injuries. He is now in police custody.

The truck was owned by Hernanie Pasquin who is into scrap metal buy and sell business.

The group spent the night in a beach in Gen. Santos City to celebrate the 6th year birthday of Pasquin’s son Hershey. Hershey was among those who died from among 34 passengers of the cargo vehicle.
