NORTH COTABATO --- Two members of the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters involved in the group’s extortion activities surrendered to the military in Pikit town Tuesday.

The duo, whom local officials identified as Nash and Mhodz pending assumption of new names prior to their return to mainstream society, are followers of Imam Karialan, a senior leader of the BIFF.

The BIFF is also known as the Dawlah Islamiya that has a strong presence in North Cotabato’s neighboring Pikit, Aleosan and Midsayap towns.

The Dawlah Islamiya, operating in the fashion of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, is tagged in all bombings in central Mindanao in the past five years.

Nash and Mohdz, who belong to a group extorting money from traders in North Cotabato province, yielded through Pikit Mayor Sumulong Sultan and the Army’s 7th Infantry Battalion, a unit of the 602nd Brigade under the 6t Infantry Division.

Major Gen. Diosdado Carreon, commander of 6th ID, said the two BIFF members decided to surrender due to the military’s unrelenting anti-terror operations in central Mindanao.

Seven BIFF terrorists and three soldiers were killed in three weeks of intermittent clashes in nearby Maguindanao province prior to Tuesday’s surrender of Nash and Mohdz, who also turned in an M16 assault rifle and an M79 grenade launcher to Army officials in the presence of local leaders in Pikit.
