COTABATO CITY – Strong waves brought about by tropical depression Marilyn affecting parts of Mindanao destroyed a fishing vessel and almost sink 18 fishermen Thursday off the coast of Maguindanao.

The 18 ship crew, all from Lebak, Sultan Kudarat, survived but their vessel, MV Sea Target, was a total wreck.

Survivors said they were navigating toward the coastline of Lebak from Sultan Naga Dimaporo in Lanao del Sur when huge waves battered the vessel at past 7 p.m. near Datu Blah Sinsuat.

The fishermen shifted to smaller banca that accompany the big sea craft as they stayed afloat until fishermen from Barangay Nalkan found and rescued them.

Chairperson Moamar Manalao of Barangay Nalkan led the rescue efforts and fed the fishermen.

Manalao’s men also helped bring the damaged fishing vessel to the coast of Nalkan.

“They told me huge waves destroyed the vessel,” Manalao said in an interview. “They said the waves were as high as a two-story building.

The affected fisher folks have been assisted back to their hometown in Lebak, an adjacent village of Datu Blah Sinsuat. (FC)
