ISABELA CITY --- A “boodle fight” banquet among Muslim and Christian leaders and newly-elected officials in Isabela City, Basilan Monday restored cross-section cordiality dampened for so long by hostile politics.

Mayor Sitti Djalia Turabin-Hataman, Vice Mayor Kifli Salliman and leaders of the local Catholic community led by Bishop Leo Dalmao celebrated Monday the city’s feast day via a traditional military style “boodle fight” banquet to show religious solidarity among Muslim and Christian groups.

In a boodle fight, diners feast with bare hands on food laid on banana leaves set on a table.

Catholics in Isabela City, Basilan celebrated Monday their Santa Isabel de Portugal patronal feast.

Among those who joined the event were officials of the Army’s 104th Brigade, representatives from local police units, Muslim community elders and the newly elected congressman in Basilan, Mujiv Hataman, former governor of the now defunct Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

The new mayor and vice mayor, who were running mates during the May 13 elections, have been reaching out to the local Christian communities to strengthen religious solidarity among Isabela City’s Muslim and non-Muslim settlers.

“It is good to see stakeholders to this local peace effort join together in building strong bond among Muslims and Christians in Isabela City,” Major Gen. Cirilito Sobejana of the Western Mindanao Command said Monday, referring to the boodle fight event.

The WestMinCom has jurisdiction over the 104th Brigade based in Isabela City and its component units in Basilan, which covers 11 towns.

Turabin-Hataman and Salliman are to jointly organize an interfaith advisory council to help them oversee the domestic peace efforts of the city government.

The council shall be comprised of Muslim and Christian religious leaders from across Isabela City, which has more than 40 barangays.
