The hard work begins! Earthquake changes lives, building designs, villages

MAKILALA, North Cotabato  - If moving to a new address seems difficult, imagine what it would be like to uproot one whole village and relocate everything - barangay hall, health center and schools - to an area outside its political territory.

In the case of the town of Makilala, it will not just one community which needs to be relocated but at least half of the number of villages most of which were built in the hills around Mt. Apo.

I was in Makilala yesterday and saw the town's hazard map drawn by the local government unit using data from Phivolcs.


Cotabato Light skeds power interruption on Nov. 9

COTABATO CITY - To facilitate primare pole relocation and line restructure due to govenrment's road clearing projects, the Cotabato Light and Power Company (Cotabato Light) has scheduled power outage from 6 a.m. to 12 noon on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2019. 


Koronadal cops probes deeper on daylight murder of SoCot security officer

KORONADAL CITY - Police authorities here remained clueless on the identity and the motive of a gunman who shot dead member of South Cotabato provincial security unit along GenSan Drive, this city Wednesaday morning.

Radyo Bida Koronadal, in a flash report, said shortly before 7 a.m. Robert Corneta, 42, was driving his white Kia Avella car (GRZ-689) and waiting for traffic lights to turn green heading toward Arellano Avenue when one of two men motorcycle riding suspects (MRS) opened fire on him.

The Koronadal City PNP is yet to issue official statement on the matter.


Mayor orders evacuation of villagers from Mt. Apo slope

KIDAPAWAN CITY --- Kidapawan City Mayor Joseph Evangelista urged residents of mountainside villages in Barangay Ilomavis at the foot of Mt. Apo to relocate to safer areas for possible landslides that aftershocks can likely cause.

Evangelista, chairman of the Kidapawan City disaster risk reduction and management council, announced Tuesday that all residents in Sitios Sayaban and Agco in Barangay Ilomavis must all be out before dusk Wednesday.


SK fishermen armed with "holen guns" mistaken as ISIS

SULTAN KUDARAT, Maguindanao  – There was not truth to reports that IS linked gunmen were sighted in town, security and local officials today said.

Speaking during the Sultan Kudarat Municipal Peace and Order Council (MPOC) meeting presided by its chair Mayor Shameem Mastura, Police Major Julhamin Asdani said the reported presence of ISIS in Barangay Dalumangcob, Sultan Kudarat was a mere “tsismis” (rumor) and that this “tsismis” was spread through the social media.


School principal nabbed in Parang drug buy bust

PARANG, Maguindanao  – Police and anti-narcotic operatives arrested here Monday afternoon a school principal during drug buy bust operations.

Police Lt. Colonel Ibrahim Jambiran, Parang municipal police chief, identified the suspect as Nasser Kali Tando, 54, principal of Miramar Elementary School in Barangay Poblacion 2, Parang, Maguindanao.

Jambiran said Tando, a resident of Sitio Miramar of the same village, was arrested at about 1 p.m. after he handed over suspected shabu to a poseur buyer during test buy.


Man who stabbed to death fellow evacuee over tarpaulin surrenders to authorities

KIDAPAWAN CITY  – A man displaced by earthquakes in Makilala, Cotabato voluntarily surrendered to authorities Sunday a day after he stabbed to death a fellow evacuee following a quarrel during the distribution of tarpaulin to earthquake victims.

Chairperson Napoleon Inggo of Barangay Indangan, Makilala, Cotabato, said Eric Matanggo showed up to his office and admitted he repeatedly stabbed a certain Michael after they both claimed a piece of tarpaulin being distributed by Dole Stanfilco in Barangay Indangan Saturday.


No strong aftershocks since Sunday 

NORTH COTABATO --- There has not been any strong aftershock in North Cotabato since Sunday but evacuees remained cramped in squalid evacuation sites bereft of water and comfort rooms since they have nowhere to return to.

Houses in North Cotabato’s adjoining Matalam, Mlang and Tulunan towns and in the provincial capital, Kidapawan City, were destroyed by strong episodes of earthquakes that jolted the province and nearby areas in Central Mindanao from October 16 to October 31.


Kidapawan exec orders 1 week suspension of classes

KIDAPAWAN CITY  – To ensure safety of everyone, especially pupils, classes in all levels, both private and public, in Kidapawan City have been suspended until Friday.

City Mayor Joseph Evangelista made the announcement as he met with some 200 teachers from the Kidapawan City schools division Monday morning.

Evangelista explained that the suspension of classes is necessary to save lives and properties and ensure the safety of students.


Eva’s Hotel: A landmark no more

COTABATO CITY -- The once luxurious Eva’s Hotel located in the heart of Kidapawan City, North Cotabato is up for demolition, with the local government putting the responsibility of undertaking it to its owners.

This came about as Kidapawan City Mayor Joseph Evangelista said the city government has no allotted funds for the demolition of the hotel, following the collapse of its facade due to the magnitude 6.5 quake that hit North Cotabato last Oct. 31, 2019.
