3 farmers, 2 MILF members killed in central Mindanao attacks

COTABATO CITY  – Gunmen killed three farmers in North Cotabato Tuesday after local Islamic State-inspired militants killed two members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in Maguindanao.

Ogie Bantas, Esmael Sumunsang and Mutalib Salungon of Barangay Salunayan in Midsayap town in North Cotabato died instantly from multiple gunshot wounds.

They were on their way home together from their adjoining farms when gunmen, armed with M14 assault rifles, blocked their path and opened fire.

Engineer, 2 minors hurt in Cotabato City gun attacks

COTABATO CITY --- A key executive of a big construction firm was seriously wounded in an ambush here Monday morning, after two minors were badly hurt in a gun attack the night before.

The 49-year-old Engineer Apollo Gatchalian Algas was driving a Toyota Hilux pick-up truck on his way to his office in the city proper when he was attacked by gunmen on motorcycles.

Algas is vice president of the Compact II Construction Company, a major contractor of high-ticket infrastructure projects in Mindanao and in other regions outside.

Gina Lopez dies, 65

MANILA, Philippines – The ABS-CBN Corporation today announced the demise of former Environment Secretary Gina Lopez on Sunday night.  She is 65.

She has been battling brain cancer, the announcement said.

“Gina was the pillar of strength that pushed ABS-CBN Foundation Inc. (AFI) to achieve what seemed to be impossible. Her caring heart and selfless kind of love inspired people within and beyond the organization to help and serve others,” ABS-CBN said in a statement posted on its news website.

Cotabato City mayor campaigns versus teenage gangs

COTABATO CITY --- The iron-fisted mayor here has offered members of emerging teenage gangs psycho-social interventions but warned of police action if they refuse to cooperate.

Mayor Cynthia Guiani-Sayadi said Sunday she will also task the city social welfare office to help address the problem that has alarmed some parents of students in local schools.

A group of 30 top members of different newly-organized local gangs, mostly high school dropouts, voluntarily yielded to the mayor last week and promised to reform for good.

Sen. Bong Go visits Kidapawan fire victims, extends monetary aid

COTABATO CITY  — Senator Christopher “Bong” Go on Friday extended financial assistance to 21 families whose houses were razed to the ground in a fire that hit Kidapawan City on August 5.

Go, accompanied by Philip Salvador and Robin Padilla, met with fire victims in Purok Cherry, Kalye Putol, Barangay Poblacion and personally handed over financial aid and goods.

Fire hits Barangay Calumpang, Gen. Santos City, Davao City too

GEN. SANTOS CITY - At least 70 homes made of light and concrete materials were razed to the ground in a fire that hit a residential area in Purok San Juan, Barangay Calumpang, Gen. Santos City. The fire erupted at about 3 p.m.

A fire also hit Isla Verde, Barangay 23-C, Davao City at past 10 a.m.  The rire scene is a residential area.

Lanao Sur, Cotabato execs working harder versus dengue

COTABATO CITY --- The provincial governments of Lanao del Sur and North Cotabato are scrambling to address the high prevalence of dengue cases now in both provinces.

The office of Lanao del Sur Gov. Mamintal Adiong, Jr. said in a statement Friday that he and physician Allen Minalang, chief of the Integrated Provincial Health Office, met in Marawi City this week to map out strategies meant to address the problem.
