Military air, ground assaults vs. BIFF in Maguindanao-NoCot borders leave elderly woman dead

COTABATO CITY -- An old woman was killed and two others were wounded, including an old man and a grade five school boy, after their home was allegedly hit by military bombardment in the borders of Maguindanao and North Cotabato before Wednesday dawn.

The slain senior citizen was identified as Misba Masla. Her husband, Ali, and her grandson Edwin, all residents of Sitio Butelin, Barangay Kabasalan, Pikit, North Cotabato were seriously injured and are now getting medical attention at the Cruzado Medical Clinic in Poblacion Pikit.

BARMM exec says swearing-in of new Maguindanao mayor ‘legal’

ISULAN, Sultan Kudarat – The recent assumption of Datu Andal “Datu Aguak” S. Ampatuan V as mayor of Datu Unsay, Maguindanao, is valid and legal under the rule of a succession of the local government code.

This was clarified by Ministry of the Interior and Local Government–Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao Minister Naguib Sinarimbo, following the swearing-in of the young Ampatuan before Senator Nancy Binay at the Senate office of the lawmaker on Tuesday in Manila.

Barangay sa Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat binaha kasunod ng magdamag na ulan

KORONADAL CITY - Ginising ng baha na nanalasa sa kanilang lugar ang may 20 pamilya sa Purok Riverside, Barangay Blingkong, Lutayan, Sultan Kudarat mag-aaluna ng madaling araw kanina.

Kasunod ito ng walang patid na malakas na buhos ng ulan.

Ayon kay Blingkong Barangay Chairman Maximino Antonio Jr., binaha ang lugar matapos bumigay ang pampang ng katabing sapa. Sinabi ni Maximino na tinangay ng baha ang ilang mga gamit at alagang hayop ng mga mamamayan sa lugar.

Church exec urges lawmakers not to heed Duterte on death penalty

The church’s prison ministry called on lawmakers not to heed President Rodrigo Duterte’s call to bring back death penalty in the country.

Duterte’s call, which was made before hundreds of assembled lawmakers and diplomats on Monday, was meant to deter heinous crimes related to drugs, as well as plunder.

Rodolfo Diamante, executive secretary of the Episcopal Commission on Prison Pastoral Care, urged legislators to remain prudent over capital punishment.

Kidnapped burger joint worker found alive but injured

NORTH COTABATO --- The kidnapped burger joint worker abducted Friday was found alive late Saturday inside a farm sack left along a road in Midsayap town in this province.

Relatives said Sunday the 20-year-old Jake Talusan has been reunited with his family now helping him through his confinement for injuries sustained when gunmen abducted him Friday in Barangay Sadaan, Midsayap.

Lt. Col. Aldrin Gonzalez, spokesman of the Regional Police Office-12, said personnel of the Midsayap municipal police are still trying to identify his abductors.

20-year-old Midsayap burger joint worker kidnapped

NORTH COTABATO  --- Gunmen snatched Friday a worker of a burger joint while on his way to work from a Friday worship rite in a mosque in Midsayap town in this province.

The Midsayap police office has confirmed the abduction of the 20-year-old Jake Omar Talusan but has no clue yet on who were behind it.

Witnesses said Talusan was on a motorcycle from a mosque in Barangay Sadaan, Midsayap en route to the Jollibee branch in the center of the municipality when gunmen flagged him down and forced him into a black, heavily-tinted van parked nearby.

1 of 2 missing Pinoys found in Phuket

COTABATO CITY – The remains of one of the two Filipinos who went missing in Phuket, Thailand on Wednesday was found Friday afternoon, the family here has confirmed.

The lifeless body of Noah “Twitt” Ibay II was found by Thai rescue workers not far from the site where he was last seen.

Family members and friends confirmed the discovery of the 40-year-old Ibay’s body.

His companion, Angelo Bien Rafael Cortez, 29, remained missing as of posting.

The two and 11 others, including Lito Cortez, Angelo’s father, were in Phuket for a week-long vacation.

Tragedy-stricken Cotabateños missing in Thailand

COTABATO CITY --- The two Filipinos missing after high waves battered on July 17 the Freedom Beach in Phuket, Thailand are both residents of this city.

Rescuers have still been searching for Noah Ibay, Jr., 40, and his companion, the 29-year-old Angelo Bian Rafael Cortez, according to Thai online news reports.

The duo was among 13 friends from this city who left for a vacation in Thailand early this week.
